Chapter 13

Orville just looked at her. “How many people you reckon to be on that team?”

Patty shook her head. “No way to know for sure at this point.” She glanced down at the remains of the bomb, then to the woods. “But I’d say a minimum of two, more likely at least three, with all the wards that went off at the same time.”

I felt a glimmer of hope. “If there were two or three people involved, then that has to clear Jack’s name, right? I mean, no way could he have pulled this off by himself.”

She put a hand on my shoulder. “I know you’re concerned about your family, but this doesn’t change anything, I’m afraid. Jack could have hired help to pull this off. And no, I don’t think that’s what happened. But it could have. You have to realize something else too.”

Patty waited until I made full eye contact before finishing her thought. “The council is going to want someone to pay for this. Whether or not they are innocent won’t matter nearly as much as making an example for other witches to see.”

Crapsnackles. I hadn’t thought about that. With all of this possibly added to the charges against Jack, the men of my family might never be allowed to step foot off council grounds again. Ever.

That was totally not acceptable to me.

“Then we’re just going to have to solve this one so that the council can punish the real perpetrators,” I said.

Patty smiled and nodded. “Yup. That’s my plan.”

From there, we visited the sites where the wards went off. Unfortunately, those visits revealed nothing new. Noone had been seen in the area of the wards at the time. Which meant that, once again, it had been a magical attack.

Orville straightened and stretched. “Well, at least we know one thing for dang sure.”

Patty and I looked over at him. “Oh?”

He nodded. “Whoever did this was a witch. No ordinary person could have pulled it off.”

I glanced at Patty but said nothing. I mean, of course, the instigator was a witch. There was only one non-witch on the entire compound of the council, and that was Orville. Most likely, he was the first non-witch to step foot on these grounds in decades. If ever, truth be told. These grounds had belonged to the council for a very, very long time.

“Granted. But I don’t see how that helps us all that much,” Patty said.

Orville grinned at her. “Oh, I’d say it helps plenty. It really narrows down the suspect list, I’d think. And if they had to be on the grounds, which if they nabbed Jack they’d have to be, then that narrows it down even further. I say we get all the security footage and give it a gander. Surely we’ll see something on it that will help.”

I cleared my throat. I was betting Orville would not be all that happy with what I was about to say. For the record, I wasn’t all that happy about it either, but that didn’t change the truth of it.
